Make a positive impact

According to CA Aquatics Director Marty Oltmanns, the pool manager has the exciting opportunity to set the tone of their pool for the summer.

“As manager, you’re the one creating that sense of community that makes Columbia so unique. It’s more of a team-building role than a taskmaster role,” he says. “Managers create the schedule, set up staff events and instill a sense of pride and enthusiasm at their outdoor pool.”

Dina Elsaesser, who started as a CA lifeguard in 2014, says that it was this sense of contributing to the community inspired her to climb up the ranks and become a pool manager in 2018.

Make lasting connections

Creating lifelong friendships is another benefit to joining the CA Aquatics team. For Connor Dobson, being part of such a tight-knit community has made the past few summers the most memorable. Through the years, he’s made countless connections at various neighborhood pools.

Build leadership skills

According to CA Pool Supervisor Brendan O’Donnell, the CA Aquatics atmosphere is one of fun, inclusion, trust, excellence and interconnectedness, with each other and the community at large.

“Managers and assistant managers are able to work as mentors to lifeguards, many of whom are joining the workforce for the first time,” he says. “Over the course of just one summer, there’s tremendous opportunity to grow as a leader.”

A day in the life

As a CA pool manager, every day is an opportunity to build leadership skills that set you up to thrive in future management roles. Your main responsibilities include supervising staff, creating schedules, and ensuring that your facility is in top-notch condition. There’s also some physical demands required, such as the ability to stand for long periods of time and bend, squat, kneel, reach, stretch, and climb without any difficulty.

To apply, you’ll need an active Pool Operators card and an Ellis and Associates Pool Lifeguard License. CA is happy to provide the training for both if needed. It’s preferred that applicants have a high school diploma and experience as an assistant pool manager or manager on duty at a CA pool or elsewhere.
